How Kybella Works

If you’re interested in a nonsurgical way to reduce submental fullness, also known as double chin, KYBELLA® may be right for you. KYBELLA® is a first-of-its-kind injectable treatment for adults with submental fullness that destroys fat cells under the chin to improve your profile.

Kybella®  is administered as a series of injections to the treatment area under the chin, destroying fat cells and producing gradual results. The number of treatment sessions will vary based on the amount of fat under the chin and your treatment goals.

The active ingredient in KYBELLA® is synthetic deoxycholic acid. Deoxycholic acid is a naturally occurring molecule in the body that aids in the breakdown and absorption of dietary fat. When injected into the fat beneath the chin, KYBELLA® destroys fat cells, resulting in a noticeable reduction in fullness under the chin. Once destroyed, these cells can no longer store or accumulate fat, so further treatment is not expected once you reach your desired aesthetic goal.

FAQS

  • What is Kybella?

Kybella is the first and only FDA-approved nonsurgical treatment designed to permanently reduce fullness in the chin / submentum area, often referred to as a “double chin”.

  • How does Kybella destroy fat cells in a “double chin”?

Deoxycholic acid, the ingredient in Kybella, causes lysis then liquefaction of the adipocytes (fat cells). The skin layer becomes tighter to the muscle underneath when the fat is destroyed, creating an even more impressive profile. Clinical results to date have been permanent.

  • What area can be treated with Kybella?

Originally developed to treat the “double chin”, Kybella is being used successfully in other areas of the body including abdomen, bra fat, “banana rolls,” and more.

  • How long does Kybella last?

The results of Kybella are permanent as it targets, destroys, and removes the fat from the body. Once the fat cells are destroyed, they can’t be restored.

  • How many treatments will I need?

People typically see improvement in localized areas within 2-4 treatments. Those looking for the maximum correction may consider up to 6 treatments.

  • How long does a treatment take?

Treatments are quick and take about 15-20 minutes.

  • When will I see results?

Within minutes of treatment, the patient can tell the medication is working. Results are most noticeable and impressive after 4-6 weeks following each treatment session.

  • What Kind Of Results Should I Expect From Kybella?

In a clinical study for Kybella, those treated with up to 6 treatments noticed up to 80% reduction in the fullness of the chin.

  • What is the downtime?

Kybella will cause initial swelling and possibly redness and some minor bruising. You may feel numbness or tenderness for several days up to two weeks. These are normal and expected sensations and are caused by the action of the medication on the fat cells.

  • How often will I need to have a Kybella treatment?

When injected into the fat under your chin, Kybella causes the destruction of fat cells. Once destroyed, those cells cannot store or accumulate fat. After the aesthetic response is achieved, re-treatment with Kybella is not expected.

  • Who Should Not Get Kybella?

Those with an infection in the desired treatment area should not receive Kybella. Pregnant or nursing mothers should also not receive Kybella as it has not been determined whether Kybella is passed through the system. Kybella should be used with caution for those with bleeding abnormalities, as bleeding or bruising in the treatment area may occur.

  • How Much Does A Kybella Treatment Cost?

Kybella treatment requires one to several vials depending on the level of fullness in the desired treatment area(s). Each vial is priced accordingly, and package discounts are available for those looking to purchase several vials. Receiving a free consultation is the best way to determine an accurate price.
